Pedestrian Monitoring to Support Roadway Design

Pedestrian and cyclist behavior at intersection and mid-block is largely unknown for Metro Atlanta locations. This leads to a lack of information necessary for the proper design of lane marking and signaling for Atlanta roadways. Researchers are developing an automated system for rapid deployment to allow collection of pedestrian and cyclist’s behavior data at signaled and un-signaled intersections and mid-block to allow for development of models for input into future intersection and signaling/marking design. As Atlanta becomes a more pedestrian friendly city, this type of data will be crucial to allow for proper design and development of future cross-walk and mid-block signaling/marking. The system will automatically identify and characterize number of pedestrians and cyclists and their behaviors in their respective intersections and mid-blocks. The system will also be designed to be portable to support data collection in multiple locations.
